According to FAA/ICAO Regulations, any structure exceeding 150 feet above ground level needs to be marked with aviation lights. When close to or at an airport or heliport, structures lower than 150 feet will require lighting.
Aviation lights, also known as "obstruction lights," are required at airports in three areas:
- Along fences surrounding the airport
- Atop the control tower, radar array and buildings
- Along the top of blast barriers
