Rio Tinto Energy America Upgrades To LED
Unimar recently reached an agreement with Rio Tinto Energy America to install Dialight’s LED based SafeSite and LEDBright fixtures throughout many of their coal mining and crushing facilities, thus dramatically improving safety and decreasing maintenance and energy costs in these locations. The rugged solid state design of these newly released fixtures creates a new era where failed lamps and expensive re-lamping costs become a thing of the past. Dialight’s newest illumination fixture, the SafeSite, is designed exclusively for hazardous locations. Rio Tinto Energy America has begun to replace traditional high pressure sodium, metal halide and florescent lighting fixtures with the new SafeSite and LEDBright fixtures to achieve a better, whiter grade of lighting with an instant “ON” feature so they can be used as needed. These rugged fixtures are perfect for applications such as this where shock and vibration are present. They provide extremely long life (approximately 15 years) before service is required. With the great reduction in power needed to operate these new fixtures, they will assist Rio Tinto Energy America in efforts to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Specific applications at Rio Tinto Energy America include: replacement of Hi Bay Lighting (400 watt HID fixtures) in maintenance areas with LEDBright Fixtures; replacement of lighting on Drill Rigs where vibration shortens the life of traditional lights; and LEDBright fixtures will replace lighting in the wash bays thus eliminating the shock of hitting a hot fixture with cold water. Future additional applications are presently being considered within the Rio Tinto Energy America facilities. Rio Tinto Energy America specializes in the production of low sulfur, sub-bituminous coal, and operates five coal mines located in Wyoming, Montana and Colorado. With a combined workforce of more than 2,400 employees and with the help of hundreds of contractors and suppliers, the company provides fuel to its energy company customers who generate nearly six percent of the nation’s electricity.

UNIMAR SPEAKS AT WMEA CONFERENCE ON BREAK-THROUGH
Doug Woehler, Business Development Manager, Unimar Inc. recently presented a talk at the WMEA Conference which was held at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, Rapid City, SD. His message, LED’S = SAFETY + SAVINGS, focused on break-through white lighting solutions for the mining industry. LED based lighting fixtures provide an innovative and “inherently safe” (incapable to ignite) product designed specifically to be used for illumination and signaling lighting requirements for hazardous locations, thus creating the ideal replacement for fluorescent, mercury vapor, incandescent and high pressure sodium lighting.

Use of Light Emitting Diode technology offers numerous benefits, such as significant improvements in the quality of light obtained. The LED lighting fixture will have no gaps in the color spectrum. It delivers vibrant illumination of objects with a whiter light placed exactly where it is needed. A much safer work environment results as eye strain is reduced and the threat of combustion from this “inherently safe” product is eliminated.

Another benefit is the cost savings realized. LED based products provide the lowest per watt solution for illumination and visual signals. The instant “ON” feature provides 100% light output from the second it is switch on as well as the ability to switch it off when not needed. Use of LED fixtures will provide up to 90% reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Further, the need for additional inventory is reduced since one fixture will serve many purposes. Expect 10+ years of operating life under normal conditions.

Additionally, Unimar’s LED fixtures are robust and dependable in extreme conditions; rated down to -55°C and up to +55°C while still providing 100% of the rated lumen output. Fluorescent output decreases rapidly at low temperatures. This makes LED fixtures ideal for use in extreme locations and in exposed exterior installations.
