The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that any building, tower, smokestack, gas holder, grain elevator or other structure, either temporary or permanent, which presents a hazard to air navigation, be suitably marked and lighted to warn pilots of its presence. Red marker or white marker lights are required at specified locations of the obstruction. The marking and lighting of antenna towers is also covered by Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules and regulations, which are to be identical to the FAA standards.

In the case of antenna towers and similar skeletal structures, the lighting system consists of flashing red, white or dual beacons and steady-burning red obstruction lights (red systems only) at alternate levels on the tower, with the number and spacing of these lights governed by tower height.
